May's Housing Starts showed a 17.2% rise in starts of new homes last month. This was a much higher increase than was expected and hints that the housing sector, at least new construction, may be stabilizing. Even the new permits portion of the report that indicates new starts in the immediate future exceeded forecasts.

The National Association of Realtors said existing home sales rose 2.4% in May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.77 million units from a revised level of 4.66 million units in April. May’s increase was the first back-to-back monthly gain since September 2005.
